Supporting CMS’s Efforts to Reduce Waste by Harnessing AI
Westat will be supporting the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in improving the value and efficiency of care for Medicare beneficiaries through the CMS Innovation Center’s Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction (WISeR) Model. This innovative model aims to reduce wasteful and low-value services in 6 states, helping ensure that taxpayer dollars support evidence-based care that truly benefits patients.
Participants in the WISeR Model will design and implement advanced, technology-enabled review processes for services that evidence suggests may be more susceptible to fraud, waste, and abuse. By using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), the model seeks to streamline reviews, reduce administrative burden, and enhance accuracy.
The Westat team, including partners Palmetto GBA, Neil Hoosier & Associates, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), and Schatz Publishing Group, will provide expert guidance and support to CMS on performance measurement, payment calculations, monitoring, technical assistance, and analytic and operational support, helping to shape a smarter, more accountable future for Medicare.
